Throwing From the Plate

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Catchers practice footwork and exchange mechanics for throws to second base, emphasizing quick and efficient movement.

Catching⏱ 12 min👥 3-6 players

Setup

Catcher in full gear at home plate with a middle infielder covering second, or a target net at the base. Coach throws from a short distance in front of the plate. Use a stopwatch to time pop-to-pop once the footwork is clean.

Execution

  1. Catcher sets up in the secondary stance with an imaginary runner on first.
  2. Coach throws a strike; the catcher receives and immediately replaces the glove with the throwing hand at the chest.
  3. Catcher uses a replace-step or jab-step to get the feet in line with second base.
  4. Catcher throws through the base with a four-seam grip, aiming knee-high at the bag.
  5. Ten throws per round; add a stopwatch on the second round and chase a personal best.
