Tag-Up Fundamentals
Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill
Players practice tagging from bases, reading fly balls, and deciding when to advance after a catch.
Base Running⏱ 12 min👥 3-16 players
Setup
Runners line up at third base with helmets on, and later at second. An outfielder or coach positions in the outfield to catch fly balls. A base coach stands where a real third-base coach would to make the calls.
Execution
- Runner takes a lead in foul territory at third base and returns to the bag as the ball is hit.
- Runner sets a foot on the base and watches either the ball or the base coach — never both.
- Coach hits a fly ball of varying depth to the outfield.
- Runner breaks the instant the ball touches the glove and sprints through the plate.
- Repeat from second base, where the runner must judge the depth and the outfielder's arm.
