Tag-Up Fundamentals

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players practice tagging from bases, reading fly balls, and deciding when to advance after a catch.

Base Running⏱ 12 min👥 3-16 players

Setup

Runners line up at third base with helmets on, and later at second. An outfielder or coach positions in the outfield to catch fly balls. A base coach stands where a real third-base coach would to make the calls.

Execution

  1. Runner takes a lead in foul territory at third base and returns to the bag as the ball is hit.
  2. Runner sets a foot on the base and watches either the ball or the base coach — never both.
  3. Coach hits a fly ball of varying depth to the outfield.
  4. Runner breaks the instant the ball touches the glove and sprints through the plate.
  5. Repeat from second base, where the runner must judge the depth and the outfielder's arm.
