Steal & Slide Drill

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players practice stealing situations, efficient first steps, reading the pitcher, and controlled slides into the base.

Base Running⏱ 15 min👥 3-16 players

Setup

Use a soft or loose base and check the sliding surface for rocks and hard spots before anyone slides. Runners wear helmets and, ideally, sliding pants. Start with sliding technique on grass in socks or sliding shorts before doing it in cleats at speed.

Execution

  1. Sliding block first: from a walk, players practice bent-leg slides onto grass, landing on the back side and keeping hands up.
  2. Add a jog, then a full sprint, sliding into a loose base.
  3. Steal block: runner takes a primary lead at first with a coach on the mound.
  4. Runner reads the pitcher's first move, takes a crossover first step, and sprints without looking back at the plate.
  5. Runner slides into second on the back corner of the bag away from the tag.
