Slow Roller Attack

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players charge slow rollers and practice deciding when to attack, where to field, and how to make a strong throw while moving forward.

Fielding⏱ 10 min👥 2-12 players

Setup

Fielders start at third base or shortstop depth. The coach rolls balls by hand from near the plate so speed and spin can be controlled. Station a first baseman or a target net to receive throws.

Execution

  1. Coach rolls a slow, dying ground ball into the infield grass.
  2. Fielder charges hard, staying under control over the last two steps.
  3. Fielder fields the ball outside the left foot (barehand only if the ball has stopped) while still moving toward first.
  4. Fielder throws on the run from a low three-quarter slot.
  5. Reset and repeat; five reps each, alternating a hard charge with a routine-speed roller so the read stays live.
