Receiving Fundamentals
Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill
Catchers practice receiving pitches in different locations while maintaining quiet hands and presenting the baseball effectively.
Catching⏱ 12 min👥 2-6 players
Setup
Catcher sets up in full gear in a normal receiving stance with nobody on base. Coach kneels or stands about twenty feet away with a bucket of balls. Use tennis balls or soft-core baseballs for the first round if the catcher is new.
Execution
- Catcher sets up in the relaxed no-runners stance, glove out in front, throwing hand behind the back.
- Coach throws to a called location: middle, low, arm side, glove side.
- Catcher receives with a soft, slightly upward move and holds the glove still for a full second.
- Coach calls "strike" or "ball" based on where the glove finished, not where the ball started.
- Twenty receives per round, two rounds per catcher.
