Pressure At-Bat Challenge

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Hitters practice controlled breathing, positive self-talk, and routine development during simulated pressure situations.

Mental Skills⏱ 15 min👥 4-14 players

Setup

Set up live batting practice or front toss with the whole team watching — the audience is the pressure. Put a scoreboard or a written situation on the fence. Have a consequence ready for the team, something light like five push-ups, so the stakes are real but fun.

Execution

  1. Coach announces a high-pressure situation: bottom of the last inning, two outs, runner on second, down by one.
  2. Hitter steps out, performs their full pre-pitch routine — breath, cue word, step in.
  3. Coach pitches; the team watches in silence for the first round and adds noise in the second.
  4. Hitter gets one at-bat; the result counts for the team.
  5. After each at-bat the hitter says one thing they told themselves in the box.
