Passed Ball Recovery

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Catchers react to balls that get away, quickly locate the ball, recover, and make the appropriate play.

Catching⏱ 12 min👥 3-6 players

Setup

Catcher in full gear at the plate with a backstop behind them. A pitcher covers home; a coach or player stands in as a runner at third. Coach throws or rolls balls past the catcher toward the backstop.

Execution

  1. Coach throws a ball past the catcher toward the backstop.
  2. Catcher turns to the side the ball went and finds it before moving.
  3. Catcher gets to the ball, drops to a knee or squares up, and looks the runner back or makes the throw.
  4. Pitcher sprints to cover home and gives a target on the third-base side of the plate.
  5. Catcher throws to the pitcher's glove; both hold the finish and the coach checks the tag position.
