Long Toss Progression

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players gradually increase throwing distance while maintaining efficient mechanics and avoiding excessive effort.

Throwing⏱ 15 min👥 2-24 players

Setup

Run this in the outfield after players are fully warm — never as the first activity of practice. Pairs line up on a common line so everyone stretches out in the same direction. Cones every twenty feet make the stages visible.

Execution

  1. Start at forty-five feet and make ten easy throws on a line.
  2. Back up twenty feet at a time; ten throws at each distance, letting arc into the throw as needed.
  3. Stretch out to a comfortable maximum distance — the point where mechanics start to change is the limit.
  4. Make five throws at that distance, then start walking the distance back in.
  5. Finish with fifteen throws on a line from short distance, at reduced effort.
