Four-Seam Grip Drill

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players learn and practice finding a consistent four-seam grip to improve throwing accuracy and ball flight.

Throwing⏱ 8 min👥 2-24 players

Setup

Players pair up at short catch distance, about thirty feet. Each pair needs one ball. A coach walks the line to check grips — this drill is worth watching hand by hand.

Execution

  1. Players find the four-seam grip: two fingers across the seams at their widest point, thumb underneath.
  2. Each player holds the grip up so a coach or partner can confirm it.
  3. Partners make ten easy throws, and the receiver checks their own grip before every return throw.
  4. Round two: the receiver must find the four-seam grip blind, without looking at the ball.
  5. Round three: receiver catches, finds the grip, and throws within two seconds.
