First-to-Second Turn Drill

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players practice rounding first base efficiently, reading the outfielder, and deciding whether to advance or stop.

Base Running⏱ 10 min👥 2-16 players

Setup

Runners line up in the right-handed batter's box with helmets on. Put a cone about fifteen feet outside the first-base line to mark the arc of the turn. Station an outfielder or a coach in right field with a ball to create the read.

Execution

  1. Runner takes a swing and runs hard out of the box.
  2. Runner banana-curves out toward the cone, then back in to hit the inside corner of first base.
  3. Runner hits the bag with either foot without breaking stride and picks up the ball in right field.
  4. Coach either bobbles the ball (runner goes) or fields it clean (runner breaks down and returns).
  5. Eight reps each, mixing clean fields and bobbles so the read stays honest.
