First & Third Situations
Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill
Players work through offensive and defensive scenarios involving runners on first and third and discuss available options.
Game IQ⏱ 15 min👥 7-16 players
Setup
Full defense with a catcher in gear, plus real runners at first and third wearing helmets. Coach stands at the plate to call the situation and pitch. Decide your team's default defense before starting so the drill has a right answer.
Execution
- Coach sets runners at first and third and calls the outs.
- Runner at first breaks for second on the pitch.
- Defense executes the called plan: throw through, look the runner back and throw, or fake and hold.
- Runner at third reads the throw and either breaks for home or retreats.
- Play the result out fully, then switch — run it from the offensive side and have the runners try to score.
