Controlled Scrimmage
Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill
Teams play a shortened scrimmage with specific coaching objectives and situational constraints.
Game-Based⏱ 30 min👥 10-20 players
Setup
Split the roster into two teams and set a full field with bases and a catcher in gear. Decide the constraints before the first pitch and write them on the fence — for example, everyone bats, or a run only counts if a runner reaches third with less than two outs. Coaches pitch to keep the pace up.
Execution
- Announce the constraints and the objective for the day before the first pitch.
- Play three innings with coaches pitching and a normal batting order.
- A coach may stop play at any point for a thirty-second teaching moment, then restart.
- Every player plays at least two different positions across the scrimmage.
- Finish with a short debrief on whether the objective was met.
