Changeup Development

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Pitchers work on changeup grip, arm speed, release, and maintaining the same delivery as their fastball.

Pitching⏱ 12 min👥 2-8 players

Setup

Start pitchers on flat ground at short distance with a partner, then move to a mound with a catcher. Have a grip that fits the hand — a three-finger circle change works for most youth players. A radar gun is useful but optional.

Execution

  1. Pitcher finds the grip and plays catch with it for ten easy throws at thirty feet.
  2. Pitcher moves back to normal catch distance and throws ten changeups at full arm speed.
  3. Move to the mound; pitcher throws five fastballs, then five changeups, with the same delivery.
  4. Partner or coach calls out any tip-off: slower arm, different stride, ball visible in the grip.
  5. Finish with ten mixed pitches where the catcher does not know which is coming.
