Bunt Defense Drill

Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill

Players react to bunts in different locations while practicing responsibilities, communication, coverage, and throws to appropriate bases.

Fielding⏱ 12 min👥 6-14 players

Setup

Set a full infield with a pitcher and catcher. The coach stands in the batter's box and rolls or bunts balls to a chosen spot. Add a runner at first base once the assignments are clean.

Execution

  1. Coach calls the situation aloud: runner at first, no outs.
  2. Coach bunts or rolls the ball up the first-base line, up the third-base line, or straight back to the mound.
  3. The catcher calls the base — "One!" or "Two!" — as the closest fielder attacks the ball.
  4. Corners charge, the pitcher covers what is not taken, and the middle infielders cover first and second.
  5. Fielder makes the called throw; reset and change the bunt location and the situation.
