Base Running Leads
Dugout Master ✓ Official Dugout Master drill
Players practice primary and secondary leads while learning proper positioning, balance, and awareness of the pitcher.
Base Running⏱ 10 min👥 3-16 players
Setup
Put runners at first base with helmets, one at a time with the rest in a line behind the bag. A coach or player stands on the mound as the pitcher; a first baseman holds the runner. Check what leads the league allows before running this.
Execution
- Runner takes a primary lead of three shuffle steps, staying in an athletic position.
- Pitcher either delivers to the plate or throws over to first.
- On a throw over, the runner dives or steps back to the inside corner of the bag.
- On a delivery, the runner takes a two-step secondary lead timed so the second step lands as the ball reaches the plate.
- Runner reads the catcher: ball in the dirt or a pass means go, a clean catch means return.
